A Golden Hour Baby Announcement at Flinders Cliffs, Mornington Peninsula


Some stories feel especially meaningful to document.


When Maddie and James reached out to tell me they were expecting their first baby, I couldn't have been more excited for them. Just a year earlier, I had the privilege of photographing their wedding in June 2025 - a beautifully cold and rainy winter's day where the weather kept us on our toes. So returning to photograph this next chapter of their story felt incredibly special.


Rather than waiting until later in pregnancy for a traditional maternity session, Maddie and James chose to celebrate this season with a baby announcement session at 20 weeks. With a growing bump, an ultrasound photo tucked safely in hand, and the excitement of not yet knowing whether they were welcoming a little boy or girl, it felt like the perfect time to document this fleeting chapter.


We met at Flinders Cliffs on the Mornington Peninsula, one of my favourite locations for maternity and motherhood photography in Victoria. The evening delivered everything you could hope for - golden sunlight spilling across the landscape, rugged coastal cliffs, crashing waves below, and endless stretches of dreamy dried grass swaying in the breeze.


Maddie began the session in double denim, her growing belly just peeking through. There was so much joy between these two. The entire session was filled with laughter, quiet moments, stolen kisses and excited smiles as they held their baby's ultrasound photographs and imagined the little person they would soon meet.


One of the things I loved most about this session was how intentionally they chose to celebrate this stage of pregnancy. A baby announcement session allows parents to document not only the anticipation of becoming parents, but also the excitement, wonder and possibility that comes before baby arrives.


For their second look, Maddie changed into a beautiful pink top that added the perfect pop of colour against the earthy coastal landscape. Music played softly as the two of them danced together, completely lost in their own little world. James even spent part of the session recording Maddie on my vintage camcorder, creating nostalgic footage that they will be able to treasure long after these moments have passed.


As the sun dipped lower, Maddie changed into a stunning brown silk set for a series of solo maternity portraits. These quieter moments allowed us to focus on the delicate details of motherhood - her hands resting gently on her growing bump, soft movements in the grass, and the simple beauty of her holding a dandelion against her belly before letting it drift into the wind.


As golden hour faded into blue hour, we made our way toward the horizon line overlooking the rugged cliffs. Maddie carried a lantern that glowed softly against the deepening sky, creating the dreamiest finish to an already unforgettable session. Silhouetted against the landscape, with the coastline stretching endlessly behind them, it felt like the perfect representation of what this season is all about - standing on the edge of something entirely new, full of hope for everything that lies ahead.
